About Insurance Over Texas

Does Your Health Insurance Work in Different States?

While you probably receive most health care in the Houston, TX, area, it’s important to know what to do if you need medical attention when visiting another state. Health insurance covers some types of treatments outside of Texas, but it’s important to choose the right office or hospital to maximize coverage.

What’s Covered?

If you travel outside of Texas or visit a second home in another state, your health insurance plan might only cover emergency medical care. Or your plan might cover nonemergency treatment at in-network and/or out-of-network providers. However, you may find that another state doesn’t have any health care providers who are part of your insurer’s network.

Maximizing Coverage

If you need to visit an unfamiliar office or hospital, find out if your insurance company will cover it. Usually, an insurer’s website will list approved facilities in its provider directory. You can also contact the health insurance company to verify coverage. This is usually more reliable than depending on an online directory, which isn’t always entirely up-to-date.

Moving Elsewhere

What if you permanently move to another state? In many cases, you’ll need to sign up for a new health plan. The existing policy may only cover emergency treatment in a different state. Certain individuals might be able to keep the same insurance without any problems, such as people who use original Medicare (without an Advantage plan).
